The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) seeks applications and nominations of dynamic, forward-thinking professionals for their next associate vice chancellor and chief of police (AVC/Chief). Reporting to the vice chancellor for finance and administration, the AVC/Chief will work closely with staff, students, faculty, administrators, and the local community to manage and administer services and programs contributing to a safe and secure campus environment; develop and implement strategic organizational objectives for all departmental services and programs; collaborate with UW-Madison senior leadership in response to university crises; ensure that the department meets its operational and financial goals and is in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, university policies, and certification requirements; and support the goals and mission of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The AVC/Chief supervises 145 staff members, including four direct reports, and oversees a $15.5 million budget. This is an in-person role, and the anticipated start date is January 2025.

Qualifications include a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible, sworn supervisory experience (must consist of at least three years at the rank of police captain or higher) and demonstrated experience developing and implementing major strategy initiatives, programs, and projects, and working with emergency management, threat assessment, and infrastructure security. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, completion of a law enforcement management program (FBI National Academy, PERF Senior Management Institute, Northwestern Police Staff and Command, etc.), and policing experience in a higher education environment.
